TEXAS WOMEN LAWYERS...

  • was created to promote women’s issues in the legal profession
  • is committed to empowering women lawyers to achieve the same opportunities and position in the profession as their male counterparts
  • develops networking resources for lawyer referral supporting women in business
  • advocates interests of women for equity in the justice system and in society
  • acts as an umbrella organization to bring together women’s bar associations across the state and nationally to share resources and speak effectively on common interests

WHY TEXAS WOMEN LAWYERS?

  • Until recently, the State Bar provided no meeting rooms for women’s bar associations at the Bar Leaders Conference…we met in the hallways  while other associations had meeting rooms.  Finally, someone wondered why and the founders of TWL started talking.
  • “Spouse activities” at State Bar events  featured Mary Kay makeovers.  Our husbands were not amused!
  • When women lawyers brought suggested legislation to the State Bar about women's issues, it filtered through multiple committees and little of substance remained or it was rejected outright as too controversial –  alimony, stalking, spousal abuse, rape shield, sexual harassment, sexual discrimination – and on and on.
  • TWL’s initial mission statement was “to own the universe.”  Today, TWL’s credo is WOMEN MEAN BUSINESS.
